The defending champion, Ohio State Buckeyes are gearing up for a title defense which will be against the team they beat in the semifinals last season, the Texas Longhorns. Pierre’s Lincoln Kienholz is still competing to be the starter for the opening game of the season.
Will Howard graduated after transferring in from Kansas State and helping lead the Buckeyes to its first National Title since 2014 playing in his only season in Columbus. Now, the QB room looks different with Kienholz being the oldest guy in the room as he is a redshirt junior while Julian Sayin is a year younger and Tavien St. Clair. Kienholz did play most of the Cotton Bowl as a true freshman against Missouri at the end of the 2023-24 season, but other than that one game, the quarterback room has a lot of inexperience heading into the season. However, head coach Ryan Day said he really likes what all the QBs can do and they will continue to compete, which is similar to what was said heading into last season when Howard started and played all meaningful snaps throughout the season. This year, it looks as though Kienholz and Sayin are the two in the competition. At media day last week, Day says the competition is the same as it was heading out of the Spring game…
Day says they are going to put both guys into as many competitive situations as possible when fall camp gets underway…
Ohio State also has a new offensive coordinator as Chip Kelly leaves to become the offensive coordinator for the Las Vegas Raiders. Brian Hartline assumes the role, but Day says there’s not many changes coming from one coordinator to the next…
Day says he’s saw Nick Saban do just that at Alabama and the success the Crimson Tide had over the years…
Ohio State will open the season season at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 30 at home against Texas.
