Pierre Post 8 will be back at the state tournament for the first time since 2022 winning both games against Huron on Thursday at home, 9-3 and 7-0 taking the best of three series 2-1.
In the first game on Thursday, Post 8 jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Dawson Getz had an RBI groundout followed by an RBI from Charlie Simpson and the Eights were off and running. Pierre added to it with three two out RBI singles as Cooper Terwilliger, Simpson and Leimbach made it 6-0 in the top of the sixth inning. Pierre made it 9-0 in the top of the seventh as Getz and Terwilliger each picked up their second RBI of the game and Simpson added his third of the game giving the cushion needed for the Eights to grab a first game win. In his last start at Hyde Stadium for Post 8, Leimbach struck out 11 guys in six plus innings of work giving up two runs on three hits. Parker O’Bryan got the final three outs giving up a run on a hit with three strikeouts.
In the winner-take-all game, JJ Bucholz was dominant on the mound throwing a two hit shutout on just 83 pitches. He had three walks and went four over the minimum in the win. Getz added to his daily RBI total scoring Carter Schiefelbein for the game’s first run with a two out RBI double in the bottom of the third. Pierre put the hammer down in the fourth with a four run inning as Grayson Hunsley had an RBI single, Schiefelbein with a two RBI single and Sutton Sonnenschein with an RBI hit. Sonnenschein would finish three RBIs in the game with a two run double in the sixth for the final tally. Porter Hunsley made a diving catch in center to finish the ball game putting the exclamation mark on the series win sending the Eights to Watertown next week.
Pierre is now 22-14 on the season and still have to wait to see who they will face in the opening round of the state tournament with games to be played Thursday night. KCCR will have coverage of the state tournament on the air and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
