PIERRE, (KCCR) — Work is underway on a project to add center line rumble strips to U-S Highway 83 and U-S Highway 212 between Onida and Gettysburg in Sully and Potter Counties. Rumble strips have been incorporated into shoulders of highways for years, but rumble strips down the center of a road is a newer technique to prevent head-on crashes by alerting drivers who drift over the center line with the loud noise made by a vehicle crossing over them. The rumble strips will be added on Highway 83 from a mile north of Onida to the west junction with Highway 212. On Highway 212, the rumble strips will go from a half mile west of Highway 83 to a mile west of Gettysburg. Driver can expect delays during the work of up to 15 minutes. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane with a pilot car taking vehicles through work zones. The grinding of the rumble strips should be finished by the end of July with markings to be installed after. The estimated cost of the project is six-point-six million dollars.
