KADOKA, (KCCR) — While most of the country was mesmerized Saturday by a hypnotic tornado in Deuel County near Clear Lake a second tornado, some 270 miles to its west leveled three homes south of Kadoka in Jackson County. The National Weather Service in Rapid City has given a preliminary E-F-Three rating to the tornado with estimated wind speeds of 135 miles an hour. The twister was on ground for 15 minutes from 7:45 to 8:00 pm Mountain Time; traveling only three miles. The tornado touched down west of Highway 73, five miles south, southeast of Kadoka, traveling southeast through the White River Valley. The first home suffered an exterior wall collapse and lose of its roof. Mature cottonwood trees were snapped and partially debarked by the twister. After hitting a second home, it completely destroyed a new manufactured home that was tied down with straps, anchored to a concrete base. The home was rolled three times, with the home coming apart from the frame and wrapping around a tree. Two people in home suffered minor injuries. The tornado has a maximum width of a quarter mile.
