Facing the defending state champions, Pierre Post 8 would earn a split of the doubleheader in Renner as the Royals would grab game one 4-3, but Pierre pitched a shutout in game two, 5-0.
Charlie Simpson had an RBI fielder’s choice in the first and Carter Schiefelbein had an RBI sac fly in second and Pierre led 2-0 early on against the Royals. But Brody Jacobson and Brogan Moffitt would bring home runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game and then Jacobson would get the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the fifth as Partrick Barnett would get an RBI ground out to extend the lead to 4-2 which turned into the game winning run. Pierre would score off an error in the sixth to push within one but hit into a game ending double play with a runner on first as the Royals held on for the win. Ridge Leimbach was excellent again as he did not allow an earned run in five innings of work with just three hits, three walks and had 10 strikeouts. Pierre finished with four errors in the game. Rylan Arbogast sprinkled 10 hits over six innings to only allow the three runs, two earned on one walk and four strikeouts for the Royals.
In game two, Grayson Hunsley got Pierre on the board with an RBI ground out to lead 1-0 and the pitching dual kept the score the same until the seventh inning. JJ Bucholz and Paxton Sohn went toe-to-toe for six innings with just the one run allowed, but Sohn was removed in the sixth without an out. Sutton Sonnenschein would get a two RBI single with the bases loaded and as the throw came in, it was well offline to allow a third run to score and Pierre made it 4-0 before Cooper Terwilliger drove in Sonnenschein to put the finishing touches on the win. Bucholz would get the complete game shutout on 91 pitches with just three hits and three strikeouts.
Pierre moves to 8-7 on the season and 4-5 in South Dakota games. The Eights will travel to Harrisburg on Sunday for a matinee starting at 1:00. Both games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
