Joe Nelson, a Class of 1971 graduate, will be inducted as the sixth member of the Buffalo Hall of Fame Class of 2025. Nelson was previously selected but was unable to return to Fort Pierre until this year.
Nelson was a three sport athlete at Stanley County as he participated in football, wrestling and track along with being involved in both band and choir. Nelson was the first state wrestling champion in school history as he left a trail to establish a competitive wrestling program. Nelson held various records during his career including the national record for fastest pin. He went undefeated in his senior year capturing the 185 Class B state title. Nelson’s career record was 67-3-1.
After graduating from Southern Illinois University, Joe spent years traveling as a solo musician. A Governor’s Award for Tourism recipient, Joe has worked in California for many years as “Joe Kady.”

The Buffalo Hall of Fame was established to honor the contributions of student-athletes, coaches and fans of Fort Pierre High School and Stanley County High School athletics. The 2025 Induction Ceremony will be held on June 21 during the All-School Reunion in Fort Pierre, following a noon luncheon. All alumni and Buffalo fans are invited to attend.
