It was all Pierre on Thursday as they hit the road to take on Spearfish Post 164. Post 8 would get a doubleheader sweep with 13-3 and 16-5 wins for the first sweep of the season.
Pierre got off to a hot start in game one thanks to a dominant first two innings with five runs combined. Sutton Sonnenschein, Charlie Simpson, and Ridge Leimbach all contributed an RBI each. JJ Bucholz helped the cause by starting on the mound with dominant pitching and a controlling pace. He would not give up an earned run and held Spearfish at bay with just five hits and three strikeouts on his way to a complete game. Leimbach and Sonnenschein would each add more RBIs to their collection as Pierre scored at least one run in each of the final four innings. Pierre ended with 15 combined hits and 10 RBIs to go along with their run total in one of their best offensive performances of the season.
In game two, Pierre was even more crushing although it didn’t start that way. The early section of the game was competitive as Spearfish would take a 3-1 lead after the first. It was a tough start for Brayden Houlette but rebounded by not allowing a run over the next five innings. This would give Pierre the opportunity they needed to form a comeback effort. However, it was not until the fourth Pierre would make good on the chance by scoring four runs in the frame, highlighted by a little league inside the park home run by Hudson Stoeser to give the Eights a 5-3 lead. The biggest moment of the stretch was the first home run of the season when Leimbach fired a two run blast over the left field wall to all but put the game away. Post 8 would score 11 runs in the final two innings to secure a 16-5 win and get their first doubleheader sweep of the season.
The Eights, now 6-5 and 3-4 in South Dakota games, look ahead to their next doubleheader Friday against the Dickinson Roughriders with coverage starting at 2:45 Central Time on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Dylan Simmons on the call.
