PIERRE, (KCCR) — A rollover crash in rural Hughes County has led to the arrest of a Pierre man on multiple charges. Sheriff Patrick Callahan says the single-vehicle crash happened Tuesday afternoon near Beastrom Road. Deputies were dispatched to the call around three pm. During the investigation, witnesses told authorities of an individual walking away from the crash scene. A search of the area took place involving the Sheriff’s Office, Pierre Police Department and South Dakota Highway Patrol. About a half -hour into the search, 31 year-old James R. Cowman of Pierre was located hiding in a tree grove. Cowman was transported by A-M-R Ambulance to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital before being taken to the Hughes County Jail. Cowman is charged with Driving Under the Influence; Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Obstructing an Officer among other charges. Callahan expressed his thanks to law enforcement partners, A-M-R and Hughes/Stanley County Emergency Management for their assistance in finding Cowman so quickly. The crash remains under investigation.
