Both Gavin Colson of Sully Buttes and Jayce Pugh of Miller were just short of winning state titles at the Class B boys and girls golf tournament in Watertown on Tuesday.
Starting with the boys tournament, Colson would ahead of every golfer who finished day one ahead of him, but Trevor Schulz of Wall, who shot 74 on Monday, would go one under par 71 on Tuesday and beat Colson by four shots on the second day, to win the Class B title by three shots in total. Colson was one over par, 73 Monday and then finished three over par, 75 as his bid for back-to-back state titles falls short. The Chargers team would tie for fourth place as Wesley Wittler would tie for 28th at 161 in total, Jonas Olson at 176 and Lincoln Olson at 189. Miller would tie for seventh as Olivier Fritzche was the best finisher tying for 11th at 154 overall. Derek Brueggeman was at 163, Jorryn Heilman at 171 and Luke Norden at 201. Stanley County’s Ian Schweitzer would tie for 32nd at 163 as he was nine shots back of top ten while teammate Wyatt Mortenson would shoot a 164. Lyman’s Canyon Garnos finished at 184 and Potter County’s Jaxon Krause was at 202.
Pugh of Miller in the girls tournament placed third, but the margin increased from day one to the final day. Pugh would shoot a 78 while Brynn Roehrich of Clark/Willow Lake, the clubhouse leader in day one, shot a 72 for the second straight day to win the title at 144, four shots better than Jadyn McDonald who finished with a 148. Sully Buttes’ Olivia Olson would get fifth place at 168 overall while Miller’s Kaihlyn Anderberg would be sixth at 169. Sydney Asmus would finish at 189 and Tayler Brueggeman at 215. Jones County’s Tayah Anderson would be at 195.
