PIERRE, (KCCR) — Due to federal budget cuts a number of recreation areas along the Missouri River operated by the U-S Army Corps of Engineers were closed or had operations reduced earlier this year. Now, one of those areas will be reopening today. With the help of local volunteers and partners the North Shore Campground at the Big Bend Project near Fort Thompson will resume operation Thursday. The North Shore Campground was the only South Dakota campground impacted. As a result of the volunteer support one comfort station and vault toilet will be reopened. The features closed May 1st. Other sites remain closed. They include a vault toilet at the Good Soldier Day Use Boat Ramp; a comfort station at Old Fort Thompson and a comfort station and vault toilet at Left Tailrace in South Dakota. Big Bend Deputy Operations Project Manager Jacki Bultsma says the Corps is grateful for the volunteers and local partners who stepped up to help restore access to the Big Bend Campground facility.
