The Pierre Governors would battle a sweep of Brookings on Friday on the road, 2-0 and 12-9, before splitting Saturday’s doubleheader at home against Brandon Valley winning 1-0 and falling 6-0 in game two.
In game one on Friday, the Governors had to battle through Tyson Antonen, who went the distance in the opening game, but he was countered by JJ Bucholz who was excellent in tough situations in the 2-0 win. Dawson Getz would get the only RBI of the game as he had an RBI fielder’s choice in the top of the fourth. Carter Schiefelbein had a little league home run in the top of the sixth to make it 2-0. Bucholz would go six innings giving up just four hits with three walks and had 11 strikeouts which included back-to-back strikeouts in the first with runners at second and third and then in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded. Porter Hunsley had the final three outs with a strikeout in the seventh to earn the save.
In game two, the offense would take over as the Govs trailed 6-4 after the first inning before getting seven runs in the fifth to take a 12-7 lead. Schiefelbein had three hits and Charlie Simpson and Parker O’Bryan had two RBIs while George Stalley, Sutton Sonnenschein, Getz, Ridge Leimbach, Cooper Terwilliger and Hudson Stoeser all had an RBI as the Govs had 11 hits in total. Hunsley would get the win in the final four and a third inning giving up three runs, two earned runs.
On Saturday, back at home against Brandon Valley, Leimbach would throw six and 2/3 innings of one hit baseball with 15 strikeouts with three walks. Will Danburg grabbed the save with the final out of the game. Getz had the only hit of the game for Pierre while Leimbach would drive in the only run with the RBI ground out as Notre Dame commit Aiden Zerr was excellent allowing the only run being unearned.
In the final game of the weekend, Pierre couldn’t sustain any offense as the Govs allowed four unearned runs with three errors in the game. Brandon Valley used a walk in the first and two productive outs to score the runner on an attempted appeal. The Lynx added two unearned runs in the second and then had a three run seventh to add the insurance with an RBI triple by Chase Leary. Simpson, Terwilliger and Stoeser had the only three hits in the second game as Danburg would be tagged with the loss in the complete game effort.
The Govs are now 12-5 and 11-4 in South Dakota games. Pierre will be back at Hyde Stadium on Tuesday to face the Sturgis Scoopers. Coverage begins at 4:45 with first pitch at 5:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Blake Dean on the call.
