PIERRE, (KCCR) — More prescribed burning is planned for the Fort Pierre National Grasslands in May. At least four such burns are planned with the purpose of reducing overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires. The fires are planned for the 348 acre Sioux East Pasture; 581 acre Ditch Creek West South Pasture; 305 acre Medicine Creek Three Pasture and the American Creek North East and Corral Flat Alfalfa Pasture that covers one-thousand 34 acres. All of the burn sites are in Lyman County. The burn areas may close to the public for several days for safety. Warning signs will be placed along roads before and during burning operations. Residents may experience smoke during the burns which may impact local air quality. Crews will evaluate weather conditions before burning begins. The burns could be canceled if weather conditions don’t cooperate. If driving in the area of any burning, drivers are encouraged to use headlights and slow down if smoke is encountered while driving.
