Tonight, it’s the opening game of the season for the Pierre Governor softball team as they travel to Mitchell to face the Kernels.
After last week’s opening game in Pierre was canceled due to cold temperature and precipitation, the Governors will start its season this evening on the road with the home opener now scheduled to be played on Thursday against Yankton. Mitchell has already played twice, but have struggled in its opening games of the year. The Kernels lost 17-7 to Jefferson and 18-2 to the defending state champions Lincoln Patriots. Mitchell went 8-12 last season while Pierre went 3-19. Elizabeth Keyes heads into her third year as the Pierre head coach and says despite last week’s weather, practice has been great to start the season…
The Governor group has five seniors as Gretchen Jungwirth, Noel Kist, Ireland Templeton, Elly Broers and Amber Roman all begin their final year with the Governors. Last year, Broers and Kist both hit over .300 as Broers hit .395 to lead the team while Kist was second on the team in hits with 17. Kist also threw the most innings in the circle pitching in 15 games and starting 11 of them as she had 51 strikeouts to 18 walks. Now, going into this season, Keyes says it’s vital to be persistent throughout the season…
First pitch is at 6:00 tonight in Mitchell.
