PIERRE, (KCCR) — The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating a one-vehicle fatal crash in Hand County. The crash happened one mile west of Wessington on U-S Highway 14 near mile marker 314 around 9:25 Wednesday morning. The preliminary investigation of the crash indicates a 2002 Ford Excursion driven by a 22 year-old Highmore woman was traveling east on Highway 14 toward Wessington when the Excursion left the road surface and entered the north ditch where the vehicle rolled. The driver was alone in the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. She was not using a seat belt. Snow was falling in the area at the time of the crash and road conditions at the time of the crash may have been a contributing factor in the crash. The name of the driver is being withheld pending notification of family.
