Team South Dakota 18U Boys would have to go into a shootout in the first game at the Tier II USA Hockey National Tournament on Wednesday, falling to the Idaho Jr. Steelheads 3-2.
Team SD would lead both times as Sioux Falls’ James Shea would open the scoring from Watertown’s Mylan Evans and Sioux Falls’ Jack Campbell in the first. After the Steelheads would tie the game 1-1, two Aberdeen Cougars would link up to tie the game as Jaxon Danielson would score from Aiden Posthumus to make it 2-1. Idaho would tie the game in the final seconds of the third period to force the game into overtime. Shea, Brookings’ Talon Hyde and Riley Linstad would all be stopped by Idaho while Enzo Stehrenberger, who scored their first goal, would be the only Steelhead to score and win the game. Sioux Falls’ Lewis Jerke would make 32 saves on 34 shots.
The shootout loss could come into play depending on the final standings on Friday. Team SD will face the Maine Gladiators, who won 3-2 over the Alabama Thunder, at 8:15 Thursday morning.
