Over the next three days, the Pierre tennis team will get its season underway out in Rapid City for the West River Invite. The Governors will play in a tournament and have duals over the weekend.
Pierre will be one of 10 teams in Rapid City for the tournament as Aberdeen Central, Aberdeen Roncalli, Sioux Falls Christian and Yankton will come from East River and join the teams of Rapid City Central, Rapid City Christian, Stevens, Spearfish and St. Thomas More. Six of the 10 teams are in Class A with Aberdeen Central, Stevens, Central and Yankton as the AA schools participating to open the season. Pierre will have a new head coach, but not unfamiliar as Kaden Hight takes over for Emily Manriquez. Hight coached last year with the Governors as an assistant as has run private lessons with some of the tennis players over the years. The Governors also graduate just one senior, Devin Dodson, from last year’s squad. Hight says the start building up to the season has been good…
Jacob Leiferman, Lucas Hight, Brady Lowery, Marty Blanchette, Levi Hight, Landon Tipton and Noah Lueking return as all have at least some varsity matches under their belts heading into the new season. Leiferman is the lone senior which returns with experience. The Governors will compete over three days and Hight says it’s an important start to the season…
Hight says he’s excited for this season and being the new head coach, but he says he has to remember to be relaxed himself…
The Governors will play over the three days this weekend. Pierre’s first home contests will be on Thursday, April 24.
