The Pierre Governor girls basketball team would fall just short of the Jefferson Cavaliers on Saturday in a 52-51 loss and finish in eighth place in the Class AA State Tournament in Rapid City as Abby Horner hit a shot with just two seconds left.
The Govs led at the break 28-25, but were outscored 16-10 in the third quarter and used their inside presence to score 30 of its 52 points in the paint. Emery Larson had the game high 23 points to close her junior campaign for the Govs while Grace Richter had 10 in her final game as a Governor. Horner was the only Cavalier in double figurers with 22 points to lead the Cavs to its second win over the Govs this year. Richter hit two free throws to give the Govs the lead before Horner scored with just two second left and Pierre couldn’t get a shot off at the end of the game. The Governors finish the year at 13-11 as does the Jefferson Cavaliers.
For seniors, Lennix DuPris, Gracelyn Taylor, Richter, Addison Soma and Carley Malm, their careers come to an end.
