The Pierre Governor girls basketball team would fall short of hanging with the Brandon Valley Lynx on Thursday with a 69-36 loss in the first round of the Class AA State Tournament in Rapid City.
Pierre tried to play the Lynx tough in the first half and trailed 18-10 after the first and trailed 37-22 at the half. But a dominant third quarter outscoring the Governors by 13 and nearly doubling its lead and even sent the game to a 30 point deficit for the Governors in the fourth. Four players for Brandon Valley hit double figurers led by Gracie Salter’s 17 points while Alyvia Padgett had 16, Amanda Lease had 11 and Ava Kellenberger had 10. Brandon Valley took advantage of 26 Pierre turnovers outscored Pierre 30-7 off turnovers. Emery Larson had the team high 12 points for the Governors while Lennix DuPris had 11. Pierre shot just 29% from the floor in the loss. Pierre drops to 13-9 and Brandon Valley moves to 20-2.
The Governors will play Mitchell in the consolation semifinal on Friday. The Kernels lost to Washington 55-38. Coverage will start around 2:15 with tip off at 2:45 Central Time on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Dylan Simmons on the call.
