The Wall Eagles used lightning quick fast breaks, capitalized on Sully Buttes turnover and held off a determined Charger squad by the final of 64-51 to earn a berth in the Class B state tournament next week in Aberdeen.
The Eagles led 21-14 after one quarter, but the Chargers gained some ground, and trailed 31-27 at the half. In the third Sully Buttes and Wall exchanged baskets, with the Chargers getting a one point lead late, only to have Wall respond and close out the third leading 44-40. The Eagles started the fourth with a five point spurt, and kept the Chargers at arm’s length, and shot lights out, to push the score out of Sully Buttes’ reach.
The Eagles were led in scoring by junior Emmett Dinger, finishing with 24 points while Teelan Kjerstad added 16 for 17-6 Wall. Sully Buttes was led in scoring by Wesley Wittler, who ended his night with 20 points while Gavin Colson added 14 for the 17-5 Chargers.
The Eagles will go into the state tournament as the number five seed, facing 21-2 Wessington Springs as the fourth seed, and in the upper bracket of the tourney.
In the first game top seeded Castlewood takes on surprise 8th seed Lyman, who knocked off Gregory 58-56 Tuesday night. In the lower bracket next week in Aberdeen, it’s second seed Dell Rapids St. Mary’s facing seven seed Aberdeen Christian, while the nightcap pits third seed Viborg-Hurley against number six Freeman. All games are played at the Barnett Center on the Northern State campus.
