PIERRE, (KCCR) — A western Mellette County man has been sentenced for failing to register as a sex offender. U-S Attorney Alison Ramsdell says 41 year-old Harold White Hat was sentenced last week to a year of federal prison time and five years of supervised release following the 13-month prison term. A federal grand jury indicted White Hat in September of 2024. He pleaded guilty in October of 2024. White Hat was convicted in 2022 of Abusive Sexual Contact, which requires his registration as a sex offender. It also requires White Hat to update that registration when moving or changing his job. Ramsdell says White had moved from an address in Sioux Falls to an undisclosed location and did not update his registration to the new location. White Hat was arrested on the charge in Todd County on August 23rd of 2024. The case was investigated by the U-S Marshals Service, which immediately took White Hat into custody following sentencing.
