The Sully Buttes Charger girls took one on the chin against Lyman Tuesday night with the result a Raider 59-16 victory as Lyman pressured and passed their way around the Charger defense and offense to open the doubleheader at the Lyman Gardens.
The Charger boys took to the court for the first time this season and came away with a 53-43 win over the Raiders to earn a split in the varsity doubleheader.
The Sully Buttes girls trailed 16-7 after one quarter and 39-14 at the half. The Raider defense never allowed the Chargers to set up their offense, picking off passes, controlling the boards and pressuring on both sides of the court. In fact, Sully Buttes did not hit a field goal the entirety of the second half, while Lyman kept up the pressure and the continuous clock was enacted midway through the third quarter.
The Raider girls were led by junior Mak Scott, who finished with 20 points, while sister Jordan Scott and Kenzie Wagner each added 10 for 2-0 Lyman. Sully Buttes drops to 1-2 on the season.
The Charger boys came out and pushed the tempo themselves, and the Raiders committed too many turnovers trying to keep up. Sully Buttes was led in scoring by Wesley Wittler, who finished with 17 points, while Eli Mercer added 13, and Jett Yackley, coming off the bench, added 12 for 1-0 Sully Buttes.
The Chargers led 16-14 after one quarter and 27-21 at the half. The Raiders briefly took the lead in the third quarter 31-30, but the Chargers went on a 10-0 run to lead 40-31 after three.
Next up is a Friday game at home for the Charger girls after being on the road for a week, and will face Herreid Selby Area with a 7:45 tip and 7:30 pregame.
The Charger boys will travel to Winner Saturday afternoon to face the Warriors, and will tip off at 1:15PM. Both contests will be presented on Country 95.3FM, with DT Meyer making the call.
