Last Thursday, the Sully Buttes Chargers beat the Faulkton Area Trojans 34-14 to win the 9B state title. It’s the first football title for the community since the Chargers beat Garretson 40-12 in 1989
Sully Buttes came into the game as the five seed while Faulkton Area was the second seed. The Trojans had beaten the Chargers by 20 points the first time they played them in Onida. But on the Thursday, it was different. Sully Buttes scored on its first two offensive possessions and five of the first six full possessions of the game. Besides the first half and second half ending, the Chargers had just two failed possessions in the game. Tom Moore, head coach of the Sully Buttes Chargers says when it comes down to it, they needed the first loss to Faulkton…
Wittler finished with 158 yards on the ground, and 194 yards through the air. He was named the most outstanding back and the Joe Robbie MVP. Bo McGee, the most outstanding line, his dad, Brad who has since passed away, was also on the ’89 team. Eighth grader Carson Mercer and his dad Travis also played on the last two state championship teams. It’s the type of small town connections which you won’t get in bigger towns. And the town wasn’t going to miss the chance to be at the DakotaDome in Vermillion last week. The place was loud and Moore says it’s incredible to have any small town get to the title game…
As for the celebration that ensued, Moore says one of the coolest things and one that will always stick with him would come a couple of hours later…
